Solar System Inspection Cost in Sacramento: What Should Be Included?
If you are buying a home with solar, preparing to sell one or trying to figure out whether your existing system is working properly, you may be wondering what a solar system inspection should cost.
In the Sacramento area, a reasonable starting price for a thorough residential solar inspection is around $300. Larger systems, battery storage, difficult roof access or extensive troubleshooting can increase the cost.
The bigger question, however, is not simply how much the inspection costs. It is what you are actually getting for that price.
Not All Solar Inspections Are the Same
The term “solar inspection” can describe several very different services.
At one end of the spectrum, someone may take a few photos, confirm that the inverter is turned on and look at the panels from the ground. That may identify obvious damage, but it does not tell you much about how the system is performing.
A proper solar system inspection should look beyond whether the equipment is physically present. It should help answer questions such as:
- Is the system currently operating?
- Are all panels, strings or microinverters producing?
- Has the system experienced recent faults or extended outages?
- Is the monitoring system reporting accurate information?
- Are there visible electrical or installation concerns?
- Is the system producing roughly what it should?
That takes more than a quick visual check.
What Should Be Included in a Solar System Inspection?
The exact scope will depend on the system, but a useful inspection should generally include the following.
Equipment Identification
The major components should be identified and documented, including the solar panels, inverter or microinverters, monitoring equipment, disconnects and battery equipment when present.
This is especially important on older or “orphaned” solar systems where the original installer has gone out of business and the homeowner no longer has the original plans or equipment records.

Visual Inspection of the Array
The panels and visible mounting components should be checked for obvious problems such as:
- Broken or damaged modules
- Loose or exposed wiring
- Heavy debris buildup
- Animal damage
- New shading from tree growth
- Damaged conduit or fittings
- Visible roof or flashing concerns near the array
Direct roof access is not always necessary or safe. Depending on the roof, some observations may be made from the ground, a ladder, photographs or other available vantage points.
Inverter and Electrical Equipment Review
The inverter, combiner panels, disconnects and other accessible electrical equipment should be inspected for active faults, damaged components, corrosion, overheating, loose fittings and other visible concerns.
The fact that an inverter has a green light does not necessarily mean the entire system is operating correctly. A system may still have a failed string, inactive optimizer, communication problem or individual microinverter fault.
Monitoring and Production Review
Monitoring data is often where the most useful information is found.
When access is available, the inspector should review current and historical production, system alerts, communication status and module- or string-level data. This can reveal problems that would never be found during a visual inspection alone.
Examples include:
- A portion of the system that has not produced for months
- Repeated inverter shutdowns
- One or more failed microinverters or optimizers
- Communication loss that hides actual system performance
- A noticeable decline in production over time

Basic Performance Evaluation
A solar inspection should provide some indication of whether the system’s output appears reasonable for its size and current conditions.
This does not mean simply comparing the array rating to the number shown on the inverter. A 7 kW system will not produce exactly 7 kW throughout the day. Production changes with the time of day, season, temperature, roof orientation, shading and weather.
The goal is to identify output that appears unusually low or inconsistent with the available system information.
Battery System Review
If the home has battery storage, the battery should not be treated as an afterthought.
The inspection should review the battery’s operating status, state of charge, system alerts, communication, operating mode and basic charging and discharging behavior.
It should also look at whether the battery and solar monitoring appear to be measuring household consumption correctly. Incorrect current-transformer installation or commissioning can produce misleading information and may affect how the battery operates.
A Written Report
A proper solar inspection should include a written report.
The report should document the major equipment, visible conditions, current operating status, monitoring findings, photographs and any recommended next steps.
This is particularly useful during a Sacramento-area real estate transaction. Buyers, sellers, agents and home inspectors need something more useful than a verbal statement that the system “looks okay.”
What May Cost Extra?

A system can remain partially operational for a long time without the homeowner realizing that production has been reduced. In that situation, a few hundred dollars for a useful inspection may be considerably less expensive than allowing the problem to continue unnoticed.
